SPMI President Update | Term Achievements

umeshursekar

Dear Fellow Members,

It’s my great pleasure to share with you PMI Singapore Chapter’s the term achievements.

My first message in May 2012, we had outlined three key focus areas for the term, first Personal and Professional Development Programs, secondly Symposium and third Governance. And I’m glad, all these 3 areas we have achieved an exceptional success by delivering 19 programs.

This exceptional success has achieved during the past 11 months with great dedication and hard work of my board colleagues, volunteers and encouragements and supports received from all of you.

Membership Growth
Based on March 2013 statistics, we have surpassed 1870 members and this membership stands highest in the history of the Chapter.

Singapore also has 4,250 PMI members and 7,402 PMP credential holders living and working in the Lion City. Considering that the population of Singapore is 5.2 million, it is ranked 11th globally in terms of PMI members and 10th in terms of PMP holders, ranking with countries like USA, Canada, India, Brazil, UK, Japan, Germany, all obviously much larger in terms of size and population.

However, we have a great opportunity to grow further as there are more than 7,402 PMPs residing in Singapore, and many of them are not yet chapter members. We need everybody's help to attract our fellows into our community of practice.

New and Expanded Programs
The chapter has organized professional development activities, focus groups, social / networking and outreach programs. In 2012-2013, we have introduced the Panel Discussions, Case Study Contest and expanded the boot camps for PgMP and PMI-Agile certifications.

In the upcoming term, we are planning following new programs…

1. Mentor and Mentee
2. Project and Project Manager of the Year Award
3. Communities of Practice
4. Member loyalty programs would also be in plan

Project Management Symposium 2012 and 2013
Our October 2012 Annual Symposium was a testament, a hallmark event for the Project Management Community in this region. The symposium was unique in many ways. With 850 participants, it was one of the biggest in the history of the Chapter and in the South East Asia. We had 26 eminent speakers and 5 panelists. Many CIOs and Sr. executives have attended the symposium at Marina Bay Sands Conventional and Exhibition Center. We had participants from Europe, the USA and the ASIA Pacific Region.

This year the symposium would be held on 9th & 10th October 2013 at the same prestigious location, at Marina Bay Sands’ Conference and Exhibition Centre. As appreciation to the support from past attendees of the symposium, the committee is extending a special discount off the early-bird rates for the month of March. Once again, we look forward to your participation.

Governance
External Financial Audit was conducted and new financial processes were also implemented to bring more openness and transparency.

Members of the Board has been working on the propose changes to the Constitution to adopt global best practices. The same changes will be presented to you during 25th April Annual General Meeting, AGM.

Volunteerism – Our Lifeblood
We had a historical participation of 45 volunteers in Volunteer Information Session on 21st February 2013 evening. I really appreciate your new innovative ideas and thoughts exchanged during the session to further improve value and services to the membership. Majority of volunteers have signed and committed to further actively contribute in the programs. I encourage the rest of you to contribute in our Chapter programs and reap the benefits of volunteerism.

Corporate Outreach
The board has also reached out to organizations such as Boeing, Credit Suisse, Barclays, MSD and others and participated in their programs to further build strategic relationship to create joint programs.

Relationship with other chapters
The board has further built strong relationships with other chapters such as Houston, Washington DC, New Zealand, Melbourne, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Japan. The relationship has created many opportunities to learn from each other particularly in the areas of governance, programs and services. It was a great atmosphere and energy for me to speak at the Annual PMI Indonesia conference at Yogyakarta.

I close my message with an invitation to our Annual General Meeting on 25th April 2013. This event is exclusive for Singapore Chapter members. Please stay tuned for more details announcing in due course.

I thank you and look forward to your continuous support to PMI Singapore Chapter. Let us continue to make our community ever stronger.

Sincerely,

Umesh Ursekar
